Composition of Final Front Cover

I started by placing the final decided title ‘Sense’ in the top centre of the cover, and added text that would be found frequently in music magazine covers i.e. artists names that relate to the genre, ‘top 10…/top 50…’, the name of the person on the cover in bold etc. I also added a barcode to create an effect of authenticity.



In the next phase, I completed adding all the necessary text to the front cover, to make the white space look as minimal as possible. Though I found that there was still a large white space visible (especially around the model). This led me to increase the size of my model, as seen in the image above.



In this edit, I simply changed the maroon colour (visible on my models beenie hat) of the text, seen on my previous edit, to the more dominant red colour, visible on my models crop top.

Second Photoshoot: Part 2

I looked through all of my images and decided on my favourite one; the image I believe would best portray the essence of my music magazine.

This is the picture I decided to manipulate, to use on my cover:

I chose this image, as her body language and facial expression works well together, giving a feeling of sensuality and high status.



I then opened the image onto Photoshop and manipulated the layers, it in order to produce a white background.



I then opened the image in an internet photo-editing website called ‘PicMonkey’ to sharpen it and add to an effect to it, which produced the image shown below.



As this caused the photo’s background colour to go from white to grey, I had to manipulate the layers once again to get it back to white.

 

After turning the background white again, I rotated the image so she was standing up straight. I decided to have the model standing straight, as I thought it looked strange having her standing at an angle. On top of this, my research didn’t support it.

This last image is the one I will use on my actual magazine cover.

 

Second Photoshoot: Part 1

In this photoshoot, I set myself a few aims. My first aim was to take more photos in general, to give myself a large range to choose from. A also set myself the aim of experimenting more with poses,though swifly moving from one to another, again, to give myself a greater range of photos, increasing my chances of finding a few with potential.

I also chose to do my second photoshoot on a white background, as I found it was common that R’n’B magazines had a plain colour (generally white) as a backdrop to the centralized model.

Font Research: Part 3

I then decided to experiment with colour further, into these different text thinknesses, to decide which would look the best, and most appropriate for my front cover:

In the end I decided to use gold; even though red and gold are both looked upon as unisex colours (as my magazine is not geared to one sex), gold depicts wealth and status, and I believe it adds a sense of prestige to my magazine.

First Photoshoot

I believe a positive to take from this photo-shoot, is the fact that i feel I have captured the essence portrayed in my mood board- I am pleased with my model's styling and attitude expressed in the pictures; it is the sort of thing I was attempting to go for and achieve.

Though on the other hand, I think the quality of these images have let me down, and I think a second photo-shoot (carrying the positives from this one) will help me to achieve the best photographs possible.

Font Research: Part 2

I decided to continue with the top font, 'Delphi SF' experimenting with it: 

Here I experimented with the letters ‘weight’, making the word bolder, and stand out more (something I mentioned previously, as being a trait of the magazines I looked at).

Here I simply experimented with colour; as my magazine isn’t gender specific, I had to decide on unisex colours; red is a colour I could possibly use.

Font Research: Part 1

 

 

This is half of the fonts I picked as possible fonts for my magazine cover title. I picked an array of different fonts so I have a range of styles to look at and experiment with.

 

This is the second half of the fonts I picked as possible fonts for my magazine cover title.

I chose to keep a quarter of the original fonts I picked. From looking at various music magazine covers (mostly R’n’B magazines), I realised, 90% of the time, the fonts used were very bold and eye-catching, using predominately uppercase. Due to this, I have decided to get rid of the more ‘fancy’, italic fonts, and stuck to the bolder, urbane fonts.

Magazine Research

This is research into the type of magazine I aim to create (contemporary R&B music magazine), rather that style- when it comes to the image I plan to use- as my model will have a completely different look, as shown on my mood board.



Music Magazine: Mood Board

My magazine is to be based around an urban/retro theme, one main inspiration being the pop star Rihanna (due to her personal style and attitude; the style and attitude I want my magazine to portray).

Though the face will also be a focus (for my front cover image), especially the eyes.
My photoshoots should portray this urban fashion sense displayed in my mood board images, but also intensity in the face, mainly from the eyes. This should display the modern idea of R'N'B music, especially from modern day female artists such as Rihanna, Rita Ora etc.

I also will attempt to capture a range of shots- face shots, mid shots, full body shots etc, as depicted from my mood board.
